동쪽 차로 약 1시간 소요거리이며, 캠퍼스 안에 Long Island Rail Road 스토니브룩 역이 있어서 기차를 이용해 뉴욕시나 롱아일랜드로 이동할 수 있다. 캠퍼스가 나무로 둘러싸인 숲 속에 있어서 조용하고 평화로운 분위기이다.
단과대학은 인문대학, 자연과학대학, 공과대학, 경영대학, 약학대학, 보건대학, 치의학, 간호대학 등으로 이루어져 있고 추가로 해양과학 조사센터, 이론 물리학연구소 등 다양한 부속 연구소들이 있다.
뉴욕에 사는 많은 한인 교포들이 다니고 한국 유학생도 많은 학교이다. SUNY의 경우 다른 주립대에 비해 상대적으로 저렴한 학비로 인해 한국 유학생들에게 인기가 많고, 또한 송도에 캠퍼스가 있어서 한국 내에서의 인지도도 높은 편이다.
